Warrenton Antiquarian Society
The Society's goal is to preserve, interpret and share educational resources related to local agricultural, community and family histories. Our main project is Weston, a 19th century farmstead with a main house and ten outbuildings. Weston farm has been designated as both a National and a Virginia Historic Landmark. We work cooperatively with Fauquier County Schools to plan and implement educational tours of Weston. At Weston we have restored an original slave/farm workers cabin with the help of archeologists from the University of Mary Washington and Mount Vernon. Descendants of the enslaved and hired farm workers who lived in the cabin visit the property and learn about their ancestors. We offer public presentations which focus on local history as well as opening Weston for visitors and programs. Over the past seventy years the Warrenton Antiquarian Society has slowly been able to preserve buildings of historical interest in order to demonstrate the history of Fauquier farming and family lifestyle.
Buildings need to be additionally preserved or improved. We collect, preserve and interpret historical documents, manuscripts, furniture and many other articles of interest which relate to the county of Fauquier. The Society publishes books and newsletters which describe many of these items and their local history. Operational funding for these projects comes from private donations, grants, event fees and book sales.
